Thought of the Day - Host A Virtual Get Together

Updated: Jul 30, 2021

Hi All,

I understand the term “social distancing” is now being replaced with “physical distancing”, which indeed is more accurate and helps remind us that we can still be social but just do it online.

Virtual dinner parties, book-clubs, play dates, and discussions sessions are just a few ideas to do with friends and family.

Gail and I have had a couple of “happy hour” events with friends we used see regularly. While it is a little awkward at first, after a few minutes things go quite well.

While the software you use does not really matter, it seems a growing number of people are using Zoom to do an audio/video conferencing. I had not heard of it before, but am very impressed. I believe it is better than the offerings from the big suppliers: Facebook's Messenger&What’s App, Google’s Hangouts, Microsoft Teams & Skype, Apple’s Facetime, Cisco Webex etc.

The software is quite small, meaning I could still install it on an out of space tablet, and my obsolete iPad, and it also does not require a bunch of other software as a prerequisite. Sign-up is easy. Unlike the big boys you do not have to provide personal information like your cell phone number, and it is platform independent so you will not get into techno-religious wars on whose software is better.

If anyone would like to “give it a practice” with Gail and me, feel free to send us a note.

Happy “distance socializing”.

Cheers

Cliff
