Thought of the Day - May 16 - By the Numbers

Updated: Aug 15, 2021

As Canada opens up coast-to-coast let's have a quick look a the numbers.

For the first time in over a month, Canada added less than 10,000 new cases. Ironically still a far greater weekly increase than when we implemented restrictions - but the trend is now down not up.

As you can see, new cases continue apace in Ontario and Quebec; Quebec had more new cases than the rest of the country combined.

Thus Quebec's share of all active cases continues to increase.

As a consequence, their population-adjusted fatalities are far, far higher than the rest of the country.

And their case fatality rate (CFR = Fatalities/Detected Cases) is worse than the US Average, yet it is currently similar to Ontario . . .

. . . but looks far worse if outcome is used (OFR = Fatalities / (Recovered + Fatalities). This means unlike Ontario (and the US) they are not yet out of the woods.

BC's active cases continue to fall. And, although we have the second-lowest testing volume per capita in Canada (after Newfoundland), testing is now outstripping cases.

This week's shout-out goes to Prince Edward Island. They have had no cases (new or active for weeks) and have now opened their eagerly-awaited lobster season.

Cheers

Cliff
