Thought of the Day - November 29 - By the Numbers

Updated: Aug 6, 2021

The world has now topped 60 million cases and is closing in on 1.5M deaths. Unfortunately Canada is continuing to see rising case numbers.

Where once we were close to the world average in cases per capita. We are now 20% higher and in deaths 70% higher.

Looking across the provinces, Alberta has moved back into top spot in new cases.

But Manitoba is still seeing the aftermath of their significant case rise earlier in the month with the highest number of new deaths per capita over the last week.

In BC cases continue to rise (while ten days ago it looked like we had peaked and were coming back down this turned out to be a reporting error).

So we are now double Ontario and ahead of Quebec in active case rates per capita.

Unsurprisingly hospitalizations continue to increase, now double the peak of the first wave.

BC has now surpassed Ontario and are closing in on Quebec.

The percentage of people turning out to be positive when tested caught up with the spring peak at the beginning of November. However this rate looks to be flattening out. Hopefully this might indicate we are close to the peak of this current wave.

Here is a chart I have not included before, it shows how Canada's large provinces compare to countries in western Europe and US state in deaths per capita.

Of note BC is at the bottom just above Norway. Shocking to note that you would be 25 times as likely to have died from COVID-19 if you were living in New Jersey rather than here.

This week's shout out goes to Ontario. While still struggling, they are faring better than most provinces with this current wave, better than they did the first time around.

Cheers

Cliff
