Thought of the Day - December 29 - Inspiration on a Sunny Day

Updated: Jul 30, 2021

Yesterday Gail and I decided to take advantage of the good weather and go for a stroll along the shores of English Bay. It has been six weeks since I have been in town so as well as enjoying the vistas and watching the boats go by, it was also interesting to observe the vast variation in attitude we experienced in the people we passed. While we often go for walks around the neighbourhood, thus we are used to seeing most people without masks, but also that most people actively avoid coming within several meters of you - often stepping into the street or crossing the road. Downtown some seemed oblivious to the need for any measures, while others were fully masked and distanced.

Last week I was also talking to Dominique. He has been living in Southern China for the past year or so. He was telling me that life is pretty well back to normal there, COVID is not on everyone's minds as, other than the need to carry your mobile phone and swipe QR codes when entering any building, there have not been cases in the area for quite a while.

As you know I have been scratching my head for some time trying to understand why many South-East Asian countries are doing so much better than us ( Thought of the Day - November 15 - By the Numbers ). While out for the walk yesterday it dawned on me. These countries are bound on eliminating SARS-CoV-19, while here our efforts are focused on addressing the symptoms of COVID-19. Yes that is far too simplistic, but we, along with many in Vancouver, took advantage of the freedom of a walk on a sunny day. Along with that we need to accept this is one of the reasons we are where we are - hoping that the science will get rid of the virus that we have been unable to.

Cheers

Cliff
