Following on from the economic downturn caused by COVID closures, people are finding it harder than ever to make ends meet; and in some cases finding enough money for food.
As you probably know, last summer the Greater Vancouver Food Bank moved its head office, warehouse and a distribution location to Winston, just a few blocks away. I travelled by there yesterday and was shocked at the sheer number of vehicles - spilling out of the parking lot and filling both sides of the street as far as the eye could see. There are cones making sure people don't park in-front of hydrants, walkways and no parking areas, there are signs at the entrances of the lots of nearby businesses, warehouses and depots, explicitly stating "No Parking for Food Bank".
One of the reasons for the additional activity is this week is the distribution of Food Banks Canada’s easy-carry pre-pack hampers. That said, two things also came to mind:
It gives a real indication of the impact that COVID closures have had on the community. This time last year you would have hardly noticed the Food Bank if you went by during open hours;
How many people are probably there due to over-extended credit? Indeed, the Food Bank moved to this location to facilitate transport via Skytrain and bus, yet most patrons drive. Why? Because they are locked into car leases they can't escape. Thus just a 10 or 20% reduction in their wages means they have no money for food.
Some years ago I volunteered at the Surrey Food Bank and found it a really rewarding experience. If you are thinking of reducing your COVID stockpile or if you have a few hours available, they are always looking for assistance. So as well as putting a smile on your face because you helped, the short walk will also do you good: https://foodbank.bc.ca/, and maybe, just, maybe, you can convince a few patrons or volunteers to do the same and help the parking problem as well.
Cheers
Cliff
