It seems it was only a little while ago when I was last writing about Nursing Week on this blog. But boy what a year it has been for nurses everywhere. As well as addressing all the issues and uncertainty of COVID, it has also meant the suspension of much of business as usual. As well as the good news, less Friday night closing-time injuries for example, it also saw less elective surgery or routine testing.
Moreover, the public support that was so vocal last year is no more as the "new normal" became, well, normal. For example, Adam Turpin, the professional singer who also teaches music at a Burnaby elementary school, sang O Canada nightly at 7 in front of his Eagle Ridge home; using his voice to give thanks and praise to frontline workers. Incredibly, he did this for a year, missing only two evenings (his wedding anniversary and Dad's birthday). His year ended on April 9th.
As I have mentioned before, over the past year we have not really introduced any new therapeutics for COVID-19 here in Canada, what we have done is improved basic care, much of which is provided by nursing staff. Quite fittingly this year’s Nursing Week theme is: ‘Nurses: A Voice to Lead — Nursing the World to Health’. While the past year has seen lots of change, one thing has remained constant, the pragmatic and personal support of nurses across the country. Happy National Nursing Week.
Cheers
Cliff
