Here we are at the end of May. Another week has flown by and Canada has seen another 7,000 COVID-19 cases (BC 56) and over 700 deaths (BC 7).

As far as mortality rate is concerned Canada is not looking too good. Here is a comparison with some of the other western countries with high mortality rates (US is the Orange line behind "Canada" - yes our current death rate per capita is now the same as the US. I had to remove Spain for readability).

While most Provinces are still doing well, as I have been saying for the last month Quebec is not. If Quebec figures were taken in isolation their total deaths per capita are now up with Italy and Spain and approaching the UK (Quebec overtook France last week) - and the number of new deaths is not falling. Montreal Island has now recorded 2,740 deaths, almost 40% of all of Canada, and if they do not do something significant their deaths per capita could surpass NYC in June.

As I talked about last week, the leading indicator of improvement, the convergence in CFR and OFR, is still not happening in Quebec.

Moreover, they still have the lions share of new and thus active cases.

Quebec is failing, failing to prevent death from COVID-19, and, as we are not doing enough to help them, Canada is failing also.
Cheers
Cliff

UPDATE: Following publishing this post Quebec reported 202 additional deaths — only 37 were from the past 24 hours. Authorities say the other 165 deaths — all from the hard-hit Montreal region — date back several days and weren’t counted due to a technical "glitch".
