Thought of the Day - November 27 - Human Rights in Belgium

Updated: Aug 6, 2021

As we have seen Belgium has the highest case rate and death rate per capita in the world; over six times the case rate and four times the death rate than Canada.

While we have heard about how badly the USA, the UK, or even Sweden are handling this crisis, Belgium has kept under the radar. Until now. Amnesty International has called out that the basic human rights of elderly people in care homes in Belgium have been violated during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to their report, the country's authorities “abandoned” elderly people in nursing homes and they died "early" due to lack of sufficient health care. Authorities delayed taking measures to protect elderly people who are staying in nursing homes. The report also argued that until August, the test capacity was insufficient for employees in nursing homes, who served without adequate protective equipment for a long time.

Sad thing is, the same can be said about Canada ( Thought of the Day - August 3 - COVID Deaths in Canada Are All About Care Homes ). And here, unlike the 61% figure in Belgium, as of last month 76% of those who have died in this country were those staying in nursing homes. Disgusting.
