It is interesting to contrast how things have changed since 2020. One of the big changes is, of course, the arrival of COVID-19 vaccines. I was out for a bike ride the other day and one of the consequences of vaccines struck me as very curious.
Last year, driven by government policy and social media messaging, we had a small cross-section of the population hunkered down here in Canada - too afraid to go out. The mantra last year was: that the sacrifices of the majority would help the minority.
This year, driven by government policy and social media messaging, we have a small cross-section of the population hunkered down here in Canada - not allowed to go out. The mantra is now: that the needs of the majority outweigh the opinions of the minority.
Of course, there is a subset common to both of the minorities from this year and from last, those in poor health and the immunocompromised. However, the remainder of these two groups could not be more different.
Last year's, they were scared by disease. This year's, they are scared by government policy.

Just food for thought.
Cheers
Cliff
