Thought of the Day - October 14 - Manitoba Joins the Fray

Updated: Aug 8, 2021

Manitoba and Saskatchewan did fairly well in the first wave. Indeed, looking at cases and deaths per capita, the two Prairie provinces were well ahead of BC in flattening the curve and prevention of deaths. However, it looks like Manitoba, specifically Winnipeg, that has reported almost three-quarters of the cases, now has a full force second wave. Manitoba is now running at over 100 new cases per day, recently overtaking BC, Ontario and Alberta with the most cases per capita per day. While still less that half that of Quebec, the trend is worrying; more so as their per capita deaths per day are now close to that of Quebec. Trudeau has even spoken to the Winnipeg mayor so it must be getting serious.

Manitoba is following the same trend seen elsewhere, with the majority of issues linked to institutions: multiple deaths in care homes, exposure in schools, and outbreaks in three jails, as well as a few First Nations outbreaks.

Unless Manitoba is planning a wide-spread lock-down they will now have to rapidly implement a Zone restriction system to try to stay get ahead of the cases.

Cheers

Cliff
