Thought of the Day - October 30 - Reaction from South Africa

Updated: Aug 6, 2021

Continuing this week's theme, thoughts from around the world, here is a short note from a friend in South Africa.

We are well, its summer (33 Deg C) and have been able to restart our business again, now that we are allowed to travel and mingle.

Our new infection rate is between 800 and 2,000 a day. Unfortunately, you cannot trust this corrupt government with stats or money - it is probably a three times higher infection rate.

With the COVID virus came all new Unemployment and other allowances - with millions stolen or lost with fraudulent claims and tenders.

Rugby is a real concern, our best guys are overseas earning Euros. Australia and New Zealand are playing on their own, we were not able to compete in the competition due to the lockdown.

I'll have a Rum on you tonight.

After peaking at over 10,000 new cases a day, things have improved of late in South Africa. That said, official figures show almost three-quarters of a million cases and, bucking the trend of most sub-Saharan countries, over 19 thousand deaths - adjusted for population this is about 20% higher than Canada.

Cheers

Cliff

Following push-back from Ottawa it looks like plans to expand the Atlantic Bubble to include Cuba are on hold. The logic was there as the chance of infection from a visit to Cuba is far less than that from the rest of Canada (and vice versa). Moreover a sunny winter vacation would be just the ticket to top up the Vitamin-D levels.
