Thought of the Day - October 4 - By the Numbers

Updated: Aug 8, 2021

Israel has been in the spotlight as of late. First they have the highest number of cases per capita in the world for countries over five million people (they are still behind Qatar and Bahrain for example). While is partially due to their fairly high level of testing (almost twice as much as Canada), they are seeing deaths increase. They have now moved ahead of the US in new daily deaths per million. This is a disturbing trend, however they still have 30% less deaths per capita than Canada. We continue to stay in the top 20 with over 270 people dying across the country in the past week.

This is almost a 25% growth from previous weeks thus Canada is off the chart for death rate increase.

Looking across the provinces. The first numbers are an indication of your chances of dying of COVID (an indication of the rate of serious infection) in the Province. The second is your chances of dying once you are diagnosed (an indication of the effectiveness of care)

As you can see Quebec has had the highest chance of dying from COVID at 689 deaths per million and the highest death rate once you are diagnosed with COVID at 7.4%. In Nova Scotia you are ten times less likely to have died of COVID however if you have been diagnosed with the disease your survival chance are only a little better than Quebec. Here in BC the rate of death is almost fifteen times lower than Quebec and once you are diagnosed your chance of survival are three times better.

This weeks shout out goes to PEI - who, by whichever measure, are still hanging tough.

Cheers

Cliff
