Thought of the Day - September 8 - Border Still Closed

Updated: Aug 1, 2021

The Canadian/US border has been closed to non-commercial traffic since the end of March (Thought of the Day - June 4 - Border Restrictions). This restriction was recently extended until September 21st. Some folk have commented that this closure has lasted for much longer than they expected. In my view, as there has been no campaign by the federal government to change public opinion on reopening, the border could be closed until the end of the year.

September 21st is not far away and as mentioned general public sentiment in Canada is still to keep it closed. This will probably mean an extension until October 21st. Given the perception that there is still significant conflict concerning the handling of COVID-19 in the US, and that this is exacerbated by civil unrest, oh and that the media coverage of both elements is likely to get more intense in the lead-up to the election, I see little possibility of a change of border status until December (by that time John Pennington will have had his day in court).

This of course is a shame for those communities along the border that rely on cross-border business, and the travel industry at large across Canada. Of course we can still fly to the US, so snow-birds can return to the US if they so desire (without their RV of course). I noticed that Air Canada Vacations now provides COVID-19 coverage as part of their packages - I guess a winter vacation to Mexico might be just the ticket.

Cheers

Cliff
