Thought of the Day - April 6 2021 - Spring Break-Out

Updated: Aug 6, 2021

In Italy and Israel, where the UK variant made landfall last year, health authorities witnessed an uptick in the spread among children and teens far greater than any recorded in their first or second waves. According to a study published earlier this year in the British Medical Journal, more than 50,000 school-age Israelis were confirmed to have COVID-19 in January alone.

Meanwhile in Italy, the northern village of Corzano, population 1,400, experienced an outbreak that infected at least 10 percent of residents. More than half—60 percent—of these cases were children who went on to infect other members of their household. In short, the concern isn’t just that kids catch the more evolved and contagious form of the virus, but also that they will spread it to their teachers and family members.

Fast forward two months and now it is Canada's turn.

Guess which were the three high schools in Burnaby reporting COVID-19 outbreaks last week. You got it: Mountain, Central and Moscrop.

For some reason, we think that we are doing a good job in this neighbourhood managing the spread of the new variants. I guess we are just like parents in denial that their kids are the bullies or vandals, if we keep our eyes open we may be surprised by what we find.

Cheers

Cliff
