Thought of the Day - February 17 - Mexico Bound

Updated: Aug 6, 2021

In February of 2020, we debated long and hard about continuing with our planned vacation to Riviera Maya, Mexico. Nerves steeled with jokes such as: "Mexico, they have no cases of Corona there", we proceeded with our plans. And had a fantastic vacation, of sun, sand, libations, fine dining and good company.

It has been a year since we returned from this, our last "international" trip. And what a return it was. A return not just back home to Canada but to the reality of SARS-CoV-2. First, we took a van from the resort to the Cancun airport. The entire way we were regaled with coughing and spluttering from the driver who was obviously in a bad way. Had we been foolish to come at all? We arrived back in YVR expecting to be confronted with some extensive screening. All we found, other than the notices concerning the dangers of Zika, was a question on the clammy border touch-screens asking us to confirm that we had not been to Wuhan as of late. Then, we were back in the open air of Vancouver. Glad to almost be home, but recoiling with the contrast from the balmy 26C weather we had left and the sub-zero Vancouver evening precipitation with which we were greeted (and me knowing full-well that instead of sailing a catamaran donning a bathing suit, I would be sluicing the snow off the deck prepping for Sunday morning racing on the 'morrow).

Amazing to think that was a year ago. Seems more like a lifetime!

Cheers

Cliff
