Thought of the Day - January 5 - Migratory Birds

Updated: Jul 30, 2021

As we talked about in June, Canadian Snow-Birds returning from the US in the spring were one of the leading causes of the first pandemic wave particularly in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta ( Thought of the Day - June 4 - Border Restrictions ). While officially the border has been closed since March, the way this was enacted, Canadians are still free to fly to the US ( Thought of the Day - September 8 - Border Still Closed ) - as we actually enter the US on Canadian soil. Moreover, while you can't drive over the border, for a fee, shipping companies can take your car, truck or RV into the US and deliver it to your chosen destination. Next, states like Florida have no quarantine requirements for visiting Canadians (you just need to do so when you return home). Finally, while medical insurance may be an issue for a few, insurance companies are more than happy to sell you supplementary COVID policies if you so desire - heck you can even arrange to get a vaccine.

While it may cost you a little more this year, if you are determined to go there is little stopping you; so this means it is really up to the close to the one million Canadian citizens that winter down south as to what they will do this season. I guess the fact that Florida has two and a half times and Arizona three times the death rate of Canada is not a deterrent for some. The latest estimates I have seen expects close to one-third of our Snow-Birds to head south again this winter.

Cheers

Cliff
