It was a year ago today when I posted the reflections of a friend, colleague and mentor from the UK ( Thought of the Day - October 28 - Reflections from the UK ). Here we are a year later when some if not all, anticipated we would be putting COVID measures behind us. The following is a recent update concerning the normal that is no longer new:
We are in a similar position here and I am busy each week again organising club meetings and receiving about 30 orders for different lunches on the Friday. My wife is also now attending her ladies Inner Wheel and Women's Institute meetings.
My speaking activities have taken off again now, and this morning I even led the Morning Worship at our Church, pointing out in the “Reflections” (used to be called “Sermon") the increased levels of poverty resulting from COVID, gas prices, etc., shortly to arrive on our doorsteps this winter and what we need to do about it.
Although now back to normal for most of the meetings I attend, one thing that I did find Zoom good for during lockdown is a presentation I give on optical illusions. It works so much better, with the “audience” viewing it on their computers/phones/ipads, etc., than looking at the images on a large screen in a typical public “auditorium”.
We still go to Dorset for a week each month for our seaside "change of view" but we have not been up North to the cottage for a while now that we have a tenant occupying it.
Yesterday, my wife and I had our flu jab and, now that is over, we shall respond to the invitation we have received for our COVID booster jab and have that soon too. So, life is not too bad here, although the daily rate of our COVID new infections is still very high 30 to 40K (mainly young people) and deaths around 100, mainly unvaccinated but not all. No vaccination is 100% effective of course.
Cheers
Cliff
