Thought of the Day - February 4 2022 - COVID Timeline

Here we are at the start of February. It was a little over two years ago when a man in his 50s who arrived in Toronto from Wuhan, China, become the first official case of the novel coronavirus in Canada. In the days that followed, Canadian nationals were evacuated from the Hubei province, Air Canada began halting direct flights from China, and the WHO declared a Public Health Emergency (it would be more than a month later before they would use the term pandemic).

Two years ago, cases were reported across the country and around the world.

Here we are two years on. China has recorded less than 5,000 official deaths, reported 500 new cases over the past week, and is now kicking off the 2022 Winter Olympics. Canada has witnessed 34,000 deaths, had close to 100,000 new cases, and is in the throes of public protest over restrictions that according to OurWorldInData are actually greater than implemented now in China. Wow!

If you are interested in reflecting on the events that led us to this point, the COVID Timeline on the site, which starts back in the murky days of late 2019, has just been updated with the month of January 2022 ( /COVID-19/Timeline All ).

Cheers

Cliff
