Wow. After spending eighteen months in denial, guess what? This month Canada finally updated its mask recommendations.
"In general, while non-medical masks can help prevent the spread of COVID-19, medical masks and respirators provide better protection," the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) now says. The updated guidance also recommends medical masks or respirators for people "who are at risk of more severe disease or outcomes from COVID-19" and those "at higher risk of exposure to COVID-19 because of their living situation."
Respirators (such as N-95 and KN-95 masks), considered the highest level of mask protection, were previously recommended only for medical workers coming into direct contact with infectious patients.
When asked by the CBC why PHAC's recommendations have changed, they responded it was "based on the latest scientific evidence on SARS-CoV-2 virus variants of concern, increased understanding of the impacts of vaccination and immunity in the population, and new data available on mask types and their effectiveness."
What a load of crap. This was all about covering up the embarrassment of false information aimed at ensuring enough supply for the medical profession early in the pandemic. Unfortunately, this turned out to be at the expense of our loved ones in care homes ( Thought of the Day - January 22 - May the Best Mask Win ).
Now, hoping the Canadian people have forgotten this travesty, PHAC is finally catching up with the science of 2020.
Cliff
P.S. PHAC has also admitted that aerosolization is real too. Just in time to recommend against seasonal carolling but too late to improve institutional ventilation before winter hits.
